Ceres (Barque) Logbook, 1855-1856.

Log book describing journey of barque Ceres which left New York in February 1856 in ballast, went to Genoa and took on specie (coined money) to carry to Sumatra. After a number of gales, she lost quite a bit of copper and the pumps were worn out so they bore off for Mauritius for repairs which were completed by May. The yard accepted the captain's promise that the Salem owners would deliver payment in London in four months and also took a lien on the vessel.
